Get Creative at the Santa Cruz Mountains Art Center
A visit to the Santa Cruz mountains doesn’t have to mean outdoor hikes and nature explorations (although it certainly can). Instead, relax indoors and tap into your creative side with a class or two at the Santa Cruz Mountains Art Center! Open to adults and kids alike, the Center is full of classes, exhibitions and activities for you to explore this summer.
What is the Santa Cruz Mountains Art Center?
Great question! Located in the San Lorenzo Valley, the Santa Cruz Mountains Art Center (SCMAC) provides the public opportunities for arts education and exhibits. Adults and youth can sign up for classes, peruse a gallery of exhibits and attend special events throughout the year. The gallery and gift shop are open Wednesday through Sunday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. and are free to attend. Classes are scheduled during specific times and require varying registration fees.
Like we already mentioned, the Center offers classes for both kids and adults. Master the art of ceramics through one of the Center’s many mud and wheel classes. Drop in on a Mud Slinging Basics class (if a wheel is available) on June 5, 12, 19 or 26 from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. for $30. Or, if you’re already experienced in clay creations, take an Intermediate Ceramics Projects class on June 6 or 13 from 4:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. for $215. Stop in on any (“Muddy”) Monday from 6-8 p.m. for $12 Beginning Hand Building classes. Drawing and painting sessions are also available for adults, with topics covering watercolor, oil, acrylic and life drawing. What about the kids? Sign them up for one or all of the classes offered during the upcoming Santa Cruz Mountains Art Center Youth Summer Art Camp, July 15-19. Visit the Art Center’s website for the full list of children’s classes.
Along with art classes, the Center also hosts several themed exhibits, free and open to the public. Visit May 22-July 13 and peruse the Earth, Water, Air & Fire exhibit. This exhibit will feature artwork that portrays the different elements of the universe. Think: Earth is stable, water flows, air is in motion and fire lends light. Visit later in the summer to see Flower Power! for art inspired by Woodstock, peace and all-things groovy. The entry fee to each exhibit is $60 per person.
